4. PPC does not help you rankings: If you are thinking of getting PPC advertising on your website and if you thing that will help your rankings, you are terribly wrong. Even if you received a black stamp on your website you can opt in to Google Adwords and fire of a PPC account.

5. You need millions of links: That is completely not true. You just need good solid one way links which will point to your website that occur naturally. Those kind of links are usually telling the search engines that you are for sure an awesome source of information and for that you will be rewarded for your hard work.

6. Pagerank is everything: Well, we have to tell you that you’re wrong again. Page rank was actually created by Google to give a power to the webpage. That really does not mean you are going sky-high in rankings or you are going to be successful. All it means is that you got a high number in your toolbar for that particular page which basically doesn’t mean anything to the world out there.

7. Nobody is partnered with Google: That is the most usual lie that someone will tell you in order to get a job or to get more money out of you for job done. Well, we will tell you. Google has no friends! He is one lonely guy and ain’t working with no one but himself.

8. Buying links is bad: Yes, this is true. Usually people think it is ok to purchase a link for their website. The search engines have told to everyone millions of times that buying a link is very frowned upon. For sure you can avoid it. For example you want to be in the Business.com directory and that costs $299 per/year. In situations like this it is ok but don’t go through a text broker. That thing should definitely be avoided.

9. Google analytics gives Google too much info: Well, it really isn’t important if they know how much times someone clicked on your website. They really don’t care and they only use it for their own strength. If you are worried that Google is spying on you, don’t be cutting corners on your website and everything will be a-OK

10. SEO is one time: How about you try to get from Europe to Asia. You have to pass thousands miles and cross rivers and mountains. SEO is same kind of journey. No seriously it never stops. SEO is something that is constantly moving and going forward. This is marketing and if you want to be on the top you have to travel all the time. Before you enter the magical world of SEO try to read as much as possible on the internet and to ask around with people who know such things. There are number of myths and legends and not all of them are true. You have to figure out which one of them are good for you.

Recently a friend asked me to check one of the websites he designed. He is a very good designer, but his client wanted a cute attractive flash header. He made an awesome flash header. You shouldn’t miss it, nice graphics flash elements were flying in and sound effect created right atmosphere. Anyhow after browsing the website it started to annoy me, every time I clicked on links the header restarted and same sound and same header was repeating. It was very pleasant in the beginning but became very annoying quickly, it was distracting me, I found it hard to concentrate and read what was on that page.

He wasn’t the first one to create what I like to call – “annoying website”. A lot of webmasters, especially the new ones, are completely “in love” with their new ideas and most of the times tend to go overboard with their design in so many ways. It’s really nice to have an attractive header, but you should always have in mind that you’re assaulting the visitor’s mind with it. You’re forcing your visitors to leave the website and never come back again. Should you do that? Absolutely not.
Web-designers should always keep in mind that the website should be a tool to send a message to the visitor which reflects the website topic and not the webmasters’ skill level.

Website annoying test. Is your website annoying?

Hmm… it’s very easy to make an annoying website. Anyhow, some webmasters are experts in annoying their visitors. See my top 5 list and you decide whether you have been annoying your visitors.

1. Background music – Unless you’re selling CD’s or you have an online internet radio station, why would you play a midi/wav file in the background repeatedly on every page
2. Very large font size – People don’t like when someone shouts at them. If you are designing a website for people with a disability then you are doing the right thing.
3. Very small font size – Do you want people to get eye-glasses? Do you want to be heard? Then keep a normal tone, do not shout, but “speak in a reasonable volume.
4. Overlapping layers – Layers can be very useful up to the point. Sometimes they are being used to put an annoying message in the visitor’s face. Try not to force your visitor to read your message, try convincing rather that brutal force.
5. Popup windows – The most annoying part of the popups is because sometimes we miss the most important information because of the those anti-popup tools. Always put your important information in the central place of your website.

Perhaps,  all of us have our own private top five list. I guess you have more annoying design cases in mind, the list is much longer than five. In order to bring this important subject to your attention  I just  wanted to describe some of the highlights.
